Ledger Live — Secure Crypto Management™

Securely manage, stake, and protect your crypto using Ledger Live paired with a Ledger hardware wallet. Keys stay on your device; you control approvals.

What is Ledger Live?

Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile application that acts as the control center for Ledger hardware wallets. It provides a polished, easy-to-understand interface for adding accounts, sending and receiving crypto, staking supported tokens, installing blockchain-specific apps on your device, and applying firmware updates — all while your private keys remain safely isolated on the Ledger device.

Why use Ledger Live?

Ledger Live blends convenience with rigorous security. The application handles network interactions and portfolio display, but critical cryptographic operations (like signing transactions) are performed on your Ledger hardware wallet. This reduces your exposure to malware and phishing while preserving a smooth user experience.

Key features

Unified portfolio

View balances, recent activity and performance for all accounts in one dashboard.

Secure transaction signing

Transactions require on-device approval; private keys never leave the device.

Staking & rewards

Stake supported assets directly inside Ledger Live to earn rewards.

Getting started — download & install

  1. Visit the official Ledger Live page: ledger.com/ledger-live and download the installer for your platform (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS or Android).
  2. Run the installer. On mobile, install from official app stores.
  3. Open Ledger Live and follow onboarding prompts to connect your Ledger device.

Only download Ledger Live from ledger.com. Verify checksums if provided for maximum assurance.

Connecting your Ledger device

After installing Ledger Live, connect your Ledger hardware wallet using the original USB cable or Bluetooth (Nano X):

  • Select Get Started if you're new, or Already have a device to restore or reconnect.
  • Choose your model and follow the prompts to pair.
  • Unlock the device by entering your PIN on the hardware wallet — Ledger Live never requests your recovery phrase.

Adding accounts & asset management

Ledger Live organizes assets into accounts by blockchain. To add an account:

  1. Open the Accounts tab and click Add account.
  2. Select the blockchain and allow Ledger Live to scan your device for existing addresses.
  3. Confirm the address shown on the Ledger device and add the account to your Dashboard.

Accounts are flexible — add multiple accounts per blockchain and label them for clarity. Ledger Live supports ERC‑20 tokens, NFTs (via integrations), numerous altcoins, and features like token swaps through trusted third-party services.

Receive and send crypto — the secure flow

To receive: Click Receive, choose the account, and confirm the receiving address displayed on your Ledger device. This verification prevents address-replacement attacks.

To send: Enter the recipient address and amount in Ledger Live. Carefully check fee estimates, then confirm the transaction details on the Ledger device's screen before approving. Your Ledger device will sign the transaction locally and Ledger Live will broadcast it to the network.

Always verify the final address and amount on the hardware device itself. Software can be manipulated by malware.

Backup & recovery

When you initialize a Ledger device it will present a recovery phrase (a list of 24 words). This phrase is the only backup of your private keys. Treat it with the same care as cash or physical valuables:

  • Write the words on the provided card or use a metal backup for environmental protection.
  • Keep backups offline and consider geographic separation for redundancy.
  • Never share the recovery phrase with anyone — Ledger support will never ask for it.

Security best practices

  • Always verify requests and transaction details on the Ledger device screen.
  • Use a strong PIN and consider enabling a passphrase for hidden accounts if needed.
  • Keep Ledger Live and your device firmware up to date to benefit from security and stability improvements.
  • Prefer official channels for downloads and support to avoid supply-chain risks.
  • Consider multisignature strategies for high-value holdings to spread risk.

Supported features & integrations

  • Multi-asset support: Bitcoin, Ethereum, tokens, and many altcoins.
  • Staking: Earn rewards on supported assets.
  • Third-party integrations: DeFi, swaps, NFT marketplaces via vetted partners.
  • Firmware & app management: Install blockchain apps directly on your device.

Advanced workflows

  • Multisig: Combine several devices or keys to require multiple approvals.
  • Air-gapped signing: Prepare transactions offline and sign them on a device without network access.
  • Developer integrations: Use Ledger's SDKs and APIs to add hardware-backed signing into apps while preserving user confirmations on-device.

Troubleshooting

  • Device not detected: Try a different USB cable/port and ensure the device is unlocked.
  • Ledger Live freezes: Restart the app and check for updates; reinstall if necessary.
  • Bluetooth pairing issues: Reset pairing and ensure permissions for Nano X are enabled.
  • Firmware update failure: Follow official recovery steps; never use unofficial firmware.

Privacy considerations

Ledger Live retrieves balance and transaction information by querying nodes and services. If privacy is critical to you, consider connecting to your own node where supported or using privacy-enhancing tools. While Ledger Live itself does not expose private keys, the services it contacts may learn which addresses you monitor.

Developer & enterprise notes

Ledger provides APIs, SDKs, and documentation for developers who want to offer Ledger compatibility. Integrations must rely on user-visible prompts and on-device confirmations to maintain the security model. Enterprises can combine Ledger devices with multisig solutions, hardware security modules, or custody services for higher assurance.

FAQ

Can Ledger Live work without a Ledger device?
Ledger Live displays portfolio information but cannot sign transactions without a Ledger hardware wallet connected.
Is Ledger Live open-source?
Ledger publishes resources and some components; however, Ledger Live is distributed as an official app. Always use official builds.
What if I lose my recovery phrase?
If you lose your recovery phrase and lose access to the device, funds cannot be recovered. Secure backups are essential.

Final thoughts

Ledger Live provides a practical, secure interface to manage a diverse set of crypto assets. By keeping private keys on a hardware device and requiring explicit on-device confirmations, it minimizes the typical risks associated with software wallets while offering modern conveniences like staking and third-party integrations. Follow best practices, verify everything on-device, and maintain secure backups to enjoy long-term, secure crypto management.
